Westonka Public Schools Honors Native Students at Indigenous Graduation Commemoration

Westonka High School seniors Isaiah Meidinger, Toby Smith and Brianna Green were presented with traditional blankets at an Indigenous Graduation Commemoration May 28.
Westonka Public Schools and the Westonka American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (AIPAC) honored three Westonka High School seniors during an Indigenous Graduation Commemoration held May 28 at the Westonka Educational Service Center.
The ceremony brought together families, friends and staff to recognize the achievements and academic journeys of Westonka High School students Brianna Green, Toby Smith and Isaiah Meidinger. The event highlighted the importance of culture, community and support in students’ educational experiences.
Norman Benson, a respected Knowledge Keeper and Native American Elder, shared teachings and guidance during the celebration. A smudging ceremony was also performed, offering a moment of reflection, cleansing and connection.
“We are proud to celebrate the accomplishments of our Native students and recognize the cultural traditions and communities that support them,” said Mark Femrite, Westonka assistant superintendent of teaching and learning. “Events like this help strengthen belonging, honor identity and remind our students that their voices and experiences matter.”
The Indigenous Graduation Commemoration was organized by Westonka AIPAC and Secondary American Indian Cultural Liaison Alli O’Halloran. To learn more about AIPAC, visit the Westonka AIPAC web page.
